A man who attempted to bake his partner a hedgehog birthday cake has been advised to “kill it with fire” after people said the result was giving them nightmares.
Edward Williams, who admits he’s “not very good at baking”, wanted to surprise Andrew with a lemon sponge cake in the shape of a hedgehog to celebrate his 29th birthday.
But after spending two and a half hours in his kitchen at home in London, the 36-year-old’s efforts didn’t exactly meet his expectations.
Photos were shared on social media of the cute cake creature he had used as inspiration, alongside the final outcome showing a terrifying human-like face with flared nostrils and mismatched spikes as lemon curd oozed out of the side.
The post went viral as people were left in stitches, with many commenting to say the ‘hedgehog’ more closely resembled Pinhead from the 1980s horror flick Hellraiser.
Edward, who has been with Andrew for seven years, said: “The hedgehog cakes are really popular online and I wanted to make a funny cake for him as a surprise.
“I certainly wasn’t expecting it to end up so terrifying. It started to go in that direction though as a few things went wrong and ended up like a demonic beast.
“In total it took two and a half hours. I’m not very good at baking. Andrew is the baker in our house. I bought the pink icing but everything else was homemade.
“It was a lemon sponge filled with lemon buttercream and lemon curd, which came oozing out of the side.
“It tasted great, so from that point of view I was happy with how it turned out. We almost didn’t want to cut into it because it was just making us laugh too much.
“Andrew was just laughing hysterically when I showed it to him.
“I wasn’t intending to put the teeth in but I had cut a smiley mouth in the icing which created this horrible gaping hole with the curd oozing out of it.
“I put the teeth in to cover the gap but that looked pretty awful too so I tried to salvage that with a tongue made from a fruit roll up.
“I planned to make the spikes all out of Flakes but I didn’t have enough so I had to use strawberry pencils which made it look even more terrifying, so I just decided to go all in and give it the nostrils.”
Photos were shared by a friend on Twitter, where it has been liked more than 13,000 times, as one person replied to say: “KILL IT! KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!! You know, before it lays eggs or something… I was really hoping that 2021 was going to be better.
“Now I am going to spend the rest of the year having nightmares about mutant hedgehog cake demons. Thanks for that.”
A second said: “I can’t seem to stop staring at it. I’m pretty sure my subconscious thinks it’s gonna try to kill me.”
And another added: “This is seriously the scariest thing I’ve seen all day…”
